Burung Roc 2

In the Selangor Malay tale of Haji Batu, who in sailing across the ocean to perform the Haj, and having been dragged down the whirlpool of the Pusat Tasek, climbed up himself to the Pokok Pauh Janggi, it is the giant Burung Roc that takes Haji to Mecca. (see Walter William Skeat’s Malay Magic. Incidentally, or rather, essentially, Haji Batu’s flight is the same as that of Sinbad, who also encounters the Roc in the Thousand and One Nights.
