1 Kibaran Bendera

Anwar Ibrahim will have his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the 13 October 2020, and, if he proves that he has the numbers to usurp the incumbent, he will at long last fulfill what has been, for him, a life-long quest for power. While I would not presume to celebrate this outcome as being for the good of nation, given that it will, after all be another ‘back-door’ government fomented in a cauldron of leaping ‘frogs’, I would, however, like to confess, before the outcome of this highly unpredictable scenario is known, that my own sympathies are with Anwar Ibrahim. I wish him godspeed in what is, potentially, a closing play in what has been a long game.

As a practitioner of the visual arts, essentially the art of signs, I can not but discern an aptness of symbolism in that, given the spectre of sodomy (a crime which , rightly or wrongly, he has been charged, convicted and pardoned) that hangs over Anwar, this perpetual challenger for the Malaysian premiership might, finally, attain his heart’s desire through the so called ‘back door’!

At a previous moment in this struggle, I presented the Dari Pusat Tasek  installation and performance at Percha Artspace, Lumut Perak Malaysia, which ran from December 2019 -January 2020. The photographs of this event, constitute a work tentatively titled Panji Pauh Ulung which is the 13th series of the Koboi Project. My essay contextualizing this project, The Koboi Project: diasporic Artist… diasporic Art, is included in Interlaced Journey: Diaspora and the Contemporary in Southeast Asian Art edited by Patrick D. Flores & Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani.

Harapan 9

A is for Anwar! Make or break Anwar has called the scene … leaving others to fall in line … or not … Some might see this as an expression of a sense of entitlement, but which leader ecer achieved anything, even the position of leadership to begin with, without such a sense of rightness in him or herself … the outcome of course is always uncertain … we have to wait and see!

Politik Ulangan (1993 -2020)

After Lat, 1995 re-presented in The Mahathir Years blog.

1993 – Anwar Ibrahim is appointed Deputy Prime Minister and presumptive heir to Mahathir as Prime Minister of Malaysia.
2020 – Mahathir resigns as Prime Minister of Malaysia for the second time, dashing, once again, Anwar’s expectations as his air-apparent.

Nampaknya hubungan Anwar/ Mahathir memberi contoh bagi teori Pulangan Abadi yang dibentangkan oleh Friedrich Nietzsche.

Harapan 5

IS THIS THE REAL GAME?

IS THIS WHY DAP AND HARAPAN ARE INEXPLICABLY ALIGNED WITH DR M?

HAS THIS BEEN IN THE WORKS?

OR IS IT GENUINELY THE LAST RESORT?

Dari Pusat Tasek 36

Budaya

Tak sopan menujah lawan,
tak elok memaut kawan;
Kejam dalam pertarungan,

saling bersalam-salam.

Adapted from Nakula

“Tumbuh berpunca, punca penuh rahsia,
Tajam tidak menujah lawan,
Tegak tidak memaut kawan,
Tetapi berlingkar dengan mesra.”

Arising from a source whose origin is mystery,
Sharp yet not piercing foe,
Firm but not restraining friend,
Ever encircling in harmony.

Dari Pusat Tasek 33

“You’ve waited 20 years, extending six months doesn’t actually matter,” Anwar is reported to have told Reuters, expressing confidence that the Pakatan Harapan coalition allies would stand behind him, as they have stood behind Mahathir.

“If there’s a request to go back to parliament, of course it can be done, but PH has the majority right now. Even those who are not in PH, some would support the PM of the day. I also have been given that assurance. They support Mahathir as the PM, and they will continue to support me when I assume the premiership.”

Dari Pusat Tasek 32

The downward spiral of the Pusat Tasek and the upward thrust of the enormous Pokok Pauh Janggi combine to create the axis of the Malay cosmos (ontology). Anker Rentse explains, from ethnographic notes that seem to have been made in Ulu Kelantan Shurga, Heaven, is on the top of Pauh Janggi, and Nuraka, Hell, is down below its roots. A gigantic hole between the roots causes the ocean water to disappear into hell’s big boiling-pot, kawah nufaka , whence the whirl-pool. Underneath the pot burns everlasting fire. A dragon guards the hole, the gate to hell ( pintu nuraka) with its body in order to prevent the ocean from running dry. In Pusat Tasek an account is kept of the good and the bad deeds of every human being in the world. The accountant in Heaven is Ka’ Tebir, and in Hell, Kiraman. The last one is said to be so busy on occasions, that he gets angry, throws his pen on the floor and declares, Ini sekarang sudah chukup!”
